Kellie Warren: an extremist running as a moderate

Updated: Oct 22

“One of the state’s most extreme incumbents.” That’s what the KC Star Editorial Board calls state senator Kellie Warren.

In Sunday’s Star, editors call Warren “an extremist running as a moderate,” and point out that neither Stand Up Blue Valley, nor local parent group Education First Shawnee Mission, have endorsed her. In fact, we have both endorsed Warren’s OPPONENT, Karen Thurlow.

The Star editors note that the KsLeg veto-proof supermajority results in little compromise in Topeka today - but Johnson County voters can change that.

From the Star:

“One of Warren’s ads actually suggests that she works with Gov. Laura Kelly, which is only true in the sense that they both have offices in the same building.”

“Warren not only did nothing in particular to end the lawsuits over underfunded schools, but she has repeatedly supported various versions of the voucher plans that would effectively take money away from public schools and make it harder for Kansas to meet its constitutionally required levels of funding.”

“In another of her ads, Warren says she’s been ‘working with both parties to get results, because that’s how we do things here.’ No, she hasn’t, and no, it hasn’t been, unfortunately.”

The editorial goes on to detail other extreme votes Warren has made in the KsLeg, including on bills making it harder to vote, and to lower the age limit for concealed carry, and her previous statements on reproductive rights. (Warren was the legislative sponsor of August 2022’s “Value Them Both” Constitutional Amendment pertaining to abortion restrictions. Warren’s amendment failed by an overwhelming 67% in her own senate district.)

We urge Senate District 11 voters to make a positive change to corporate attorney Karen Thurlow, who will actually work with Gov. Laura Kelly; who will NOT vote to take money away from Blue Valley Schools in the form of voucher schemes; and who WILL vote to support our kids’ schools with adequate funding. Gov. Kelly has endorsed Karen Thurlow, NOT Kellie Warren.
