During Jim McMullen’s 4 years on the Board of Education, he has voted NO 3 times on a contract with Children’s Mercy Hospital to provide masters-level Social Workers in BV Schools. Each vote was 6 - 1, with McMullen the lone NO vote.
Several years ago, Blue Valley faced several youth suicides and suicide attempts yearly. District leaders and community members came together to try and do something about these tragedies. One solution was to enhance mental health resources by providing a licensed mental health professional - a Social Worker - at every BV School.
The combination of efforts resulted in a sharp decline in suicides and attempts - but there’s still more work to do. Students also can’t learn their best when their mental health is suffering. And students with mental health challenges can impact the learning of their classmates. Despite all this, 𝗝𝗶𝗺 𝗠𝗰𝗠𝘂𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘃𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗡𝗢, 𝗡𝗢, 𝗡𝗢 𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀.
We have endorsed former BV Superintendent Dr. David Benson for the BV School Board, South area. Dr. Benson is a career educator who understands the importance of a collaborative team including teachers and other educators but also mental health professionals, school nurses, and other staff working to support students.
ALL BV voters can vote for Dr. Benson (along with Dr. Sonya Evans and Gina Knapp) in the School Board election Tues., Nov. 4; 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 in-person voting starts Sat., Oct. 25 at BV Hilltop campus. Make a plan to vote.
