We’ve endorsed former teacher and longtime public education advocate Rep. Nikki McDonald for re-election to Kansas House District 49. HD 49 is located just west of HD 8, on the west side of Blue Valley. The majority of HD 49 voters are Olathe School District residents, but it includes a small portion of Blue Valley, too.
Nikki McDonald was elected in 2023 by the precinct committee to fill a legislative opening. She served the 2024 session and is now running for re-election. McDonald, an Olathe resident for 20 years, has volunteered as a public education advocate with various parent groups in Johnson County. Her children attend Olathe public schools. In KsLeg, McDonald serves on the House Committee on K-12 Education Budget and also on the Kansas Board of Regents’ Literacy Advisory Committee. She is active in the community, volunteering at the Project 10/20 Homeless shelter among numerous causes she supports.
In the legislature, McDonald supported Gov. Kelly’s plan for responsible tax relief and also voted to fully fund public schools, including funding Special Education. She opposes tax dollars being diverted from public schools to private schools. A responsible gun owner herself, she supports gun safety measures and does not believe school staff, other than Law Enforcement Officers (SROs), should be armed at school. McDonald says, “Government should not be interfering with freedom of speech. Make no mistake - banning books falls into this category.”
McDonald’s opponent’s website focuses on lower taxes and “dollars to the classroom.” Our members will recognize “dollars to the classroom” as a false “problem” made up by Americans for Prosperity and the Kansas Policy Institute (Dave Trabert). Anti-tax, anti-government groups use this catchphrase to imply that public schools don’t spend funds wisely and waste money on non-classroom uses. That’s just not true. We’ve addressed this tiresome lie many times over the years. We’ve lost count of how many candidates claim to “support” our neighborhood schools in one breath, then claim those schools are wasting money. A candidate who expresses concern about the manufactured problem of “dollars to the classroom” raises a big red flag with us.
