We’ve endorsed Jason Anderson, a technology executive and Blue Valley parent, for Kansas State Senate District 35. District 35 is located on the west side of Blue Valley and includes some voters in Olathe and Spring Hill.
Anderson moved to Blue Valley for the schools. He has been involved in our community for years, including volunteering his time to advocate for public education. Anderson understands that our excellent neighborhood schools keep our property values strong and are the foundation of our local economy. He strongly supports public education, and recognizes the role it plays in educating ALL students to achieve their full potential.
Anderson has served on the BV Schools Finance and Operations Board
Advisory Committee, which he says has been a valuable learning resource on the intricacies of how school funding works in Kansas. This understanding is critical for any Kansas Senator.
Anderson opposes sending tax dollars to private schools, which is an ongoing threat to Blue Valley that all voters need to be aware of. Read more here: https://www.standupbluevalley.org/post/the-school-chooses-your-child-your-property-values-plummet-part-i
Anderson opposes school staff (other than SROs) carrying guns at school.
Kansas Senate District 35 is a new district, created since the last State Senate election. There is no incumbent. Anderson’s opponent did not return our survey. His opponent’s top stated position on his website is “lower taxes.” Of course, we all want low taxes, and Jason Anderson addresses this on his website: https://www.jasonandersonforkansas.com/tax-economy
As we've seen before, when a candidate starts the conversation with “low taxes,” that candidate may not support fully funding important state responsibilities, including public education. While he doesn’t specifically address vouchers, Anderson’s opponent uses language we associate with voucher-supporters: “...parents should be in control of their child's education. Creating a free market in education...” Free market?! Schools aren’t factories and kids aren’t widgets. We raise our eyebrows at these terms, since they’re standard code-words for school privatization supporters.
