Which legislators voted FOR cuts to our kids' schools?
The anti-public education Republican supermajority, controlled by Senate President Ty Masterson and Speaker of the House Dan Hawkins, is wholly responsible for the program and staff cuts recently announced in Blue Valley Schools (and in other districts in JoCo and across the state).

Public school districts across the state sounded the alarm - they wouldnโt be able to make ends meet without the ๐บ๐ถ๐น๐น๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ฑ๐ผ๐น๐น๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ they would be short. They also pointed out: Funds had already been appropriated for public education, and were available to simply be reallocated to cover the gap.
The bad budget passed 67 to 53 in the House and 23 to 16 in the Senate. Not even close to unanimous. (Links to vote counts in comments.) Now the legislators who are responsible for staff and program cuts to our kidsโ schools want you to vote for them! Theyโre claiming they support our schools - because they know thatโs what voters want to hear!

EVERY one who voted NO - standing up for our kidsโ schools - should be re-elected (or in the case of Sen. Cindy Holscher, elected as KS Governor).
When you hear legislators say they โvoted to fully fund public schools,โ that statement refers to the per-pupil funding that the KS Supreme Court REQUIRED KsLeg to provide - the result of a years-long lawsuit (Gannon). But when per-pupil funds (that shouldย go to classroom teachers, programs like art and music, world language, athletics) must be diverted to cover excess cost to educate students needing Special Education services, it results in lower per-pupil amounts to EVERY student. In BV, that amounted to $16 MILLION in 2025-26. Legislators 100% knew this before they voted. District staff and Board of Education members made direct pleas. Communication was crystal-clear.
We appreciate the Blue Valley School Board and administrators, including Superintendent Dr. Gillian Chapman, for their efforts to educate legislators and encourage them to support our kidsโ schools, and their candid communication with voters now.
