Becky Fast for County Commission District 1
For Johnson County Commissioner District 1, we have endorsed incumbent County Commissioner Becky Fast.
Becky Fast was elected to the Board of County Commissioners in 2018 and re-elected in 2022. Prior to that, she served two terms on the Roeland Park City Council. She is a former elementary school teacher, and holds a Master’s in Social Work and Public Administration from the University of Kansas. She has worked as a public policy analyst improving services for older adults and persons with disabilities. She was Director of Constituent Services for former Congressman Dennis Moore, representing Kansas’ 3rd District.
Fast volunteers at a number of community and public school-based organizations. She has also served on committees with the United Way of Greater Kansas City and on the Boards of Directors for the Kansas Families for Public Education and the Drug and Alcoholism Council of Johnson County.
Fast’s early career as an elementary education and a Title 1 teacher led her to social work, due to her concerns for kids’ mental health needs. Children, their families, and educators deserve support for mental health to be their best at school, work, and life. Becky Fast has been a huge advocate for mental health services in JoCo, championing 24/7 access to mental health care in our county.
Fast has served 2 terms on the County Commission and is seeking a third term. Fast has voted to lower the mill levy 6 out of her 8 years in office; it’s lower than it was in 2019. She brought forward an efficiency audit which found millions of dollars that could be saved. She worked to get mental health responses integrated with 911 services. She spoke knowledgeably about a wide variety of topics including the aging population demographic in JoCo, at the recent Johnson County Post forum (link in comments).
Fast’s challenger has attended over 200 County Commission meetings, where he has given public comment; he talked about this during the JoCo Post candidate forum. During the forum, Fast countered several of her challenger’s statements as false. If you haven’t already decided to vote for Fast, we urge you to watch at least part of the forum.
