Gun Lobby "A" Grades Fail our BV Community

The NRA “grades” candidates on how well they adhere to NRA positions on “Gun Rights.” An “A” means the candidate has voted like the NRA wants them to while in office. “AQ” means they were graded “A'' based on NRA questionnaire answers. “?” means they have no voting record and/or didn’t return the questionnaire. And an “F”...well, that’s what some of our incumbent endorsed candidates earned from their voting records. In the NRA-grading world, “F” is good!

While most NRA positions don’t overlap with public education issues, there ARE some that do.

One example is question #9 on the linked NRA questionnaire: “Do you support state legislation reducing or eliminating gun-free zones that are not secured?” (defined by the NRA as having “all points of ingress and egress protected by metal detectors and armed security” - here, the NRA is advocating for removal of gun-free zone designation unless those listed measures are in place.)

A “Yes” answer supports legislation to reduce or eliminate gun-free zones. This applies to our public schools. Such legislation would apply to teachers and staff, parents, other visitors, and perhaps even students over the age of 18 - if passed, allowing the carrying of guns into schools if those schools aren’t “secured” as defined above (our Blue Valley Schools do NOT have metal detectors and armed security at each point of ingress and egress). Then, in Question #15, the NRA advocates for 18-year-olds being able to apply for a concealed carry permit.
