Nikki McDonald for House District 49
In KS House District 49, we have endorsed incumbent Representative Nikki McDonald for re-election. McDonald’s children were educated in Olathe Public Schools; she is a former public school teacher who still substitutes during legislative breaks. She is also a longtime public education advocate and active community volunteer. HD 49 is located in Olathe and Overland Park, and has a small number of Blue Valley voters in its boundaries.
Nikki McDonald was first elected in 2023 by a precinct committee to complete the unexpired term of her predecessor, who resigned; she was then elected by voters in 2024 and is now running for reelection.
McDonald serves on the legislature’s Education Funding Task Force, working on the updated school funding formula. She also serves on the KsLeg Blueprint for Literacy Advisory Committee, which is working to modernize the teaching of reading in Kansas to align with established “science of reading” best practices. While in office, McDonald has voted to fully fund public schools, including Special Education. She firmly opposes vouchers or other diversion of tax money to private, unaccountable schools.
McDonald says, “Education and economic development are deeply connected.”
McDonald is being challenged by Republican Tricia Sinclair. Sinclair was the treasurer for KS Sen. TJ Rose when he ran for SD 35 two years ago. As a KS Senator, Rose has voted against fully funding special education excess costs, passing a significant financial burden on to local taxpayers and resulting in public education cuts now being seen today. Rose has also voted for voucher-type schemes, and against voting rights.
Like the other Republican candidates we’ve profiled, Sinclair has “Cap Property Taxes” as one of her top priorities. We’ll ask again: the Masterson-led Republican supermajority has had 15 YEARS to do exactly this - why haven't they done it?
The MAGA supermajority has had the numbers in both chambers of KsLeg for 15 YEARS to pass ANY legislation and override ANY Governor’s veto. What would newly-elected MAGA Republicans do differently?
In fact, Nikki McDonald HAS supported targeted property tax relief and, as a legislator, voted for responsible tax cuts - ones that ensure we have enough revenue to support funding needs.
The Kansas Republican Party is spending money sending mailers backing Sinclair, and like in HD 28, we’ll ask: what do they expect in return? We can only guess they’ll expect Sinclair to vote for the anti-tax, anti-public education, pro-voucher, anti-voting rights platform of the Masterson-led Republican MAGAs.
McDonald earned the Gun Sense Candidate distinction from Moms Demand Action. See all of her endorsements on her website; link in comments. Her opponent’s website does not list any endorsements. Her opponent does not appear to have a candidate facebook page. Sinclair did not attend a recent candidate meet and greet sponsored by League of Women Voters - and it was held in HD 49.
The 2024 election for HD 49 was decided by 148 votes out of over 12,000 total. It is critical that voters who support our excellent Johnson County public schools make the effort to vote in this election. Re-elect Nikki McDonald to continue her good work for our neighborhood public schools in the KS House of Representatives.
