Sara Kiewiet for HD 27

In KS House District 27, we’ve endorsed attorney, Prairie Star Middle School PTO Secretary, and Blue Valley parent Sara Kiewiet. Three of the 5 BV high schools are located within the boundaries of HD 27.

Sara Kiewiet and her husband moved their family here for the schools. She earned her law degree from The Ohio State University, along with a Certificate in Alternative Dispute Resolution: training in finding common ground. She has served as PTO secretary at PSMS for three years. During that time, she has watched district budgets tighten and programs disappear. She's running for the KS House because Kansas families shouldn't have to wonder whether the schools they moved here for will still be exceptional by the time their kids graduate.

𝗞𝗶𝗲𝘄𝗶𝗲𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗩 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗕𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗧𝗼𝗺 𝗠𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗹, who is one of the biggest cheerleaders for the success of our neighborhood public schools. See other endorsements, and read her thoughts and positions on issues on her campaign Facebook page; link in comments.

Kiewiet is challenging Rep. Sean Tarwater, who 𝙘𝙡𝙖𝙞𝙢𝙨 to be “pro-education” (like many of the MAGA Republicans do). But as Kiewiet says: “𝗕𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗼-𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀. It means making sure the people educating and supporting our kids have the resources to do their jobs.”

We’ll remind our readers that while Tarwater 𝙘𝙡𝙖𝙞𝙢𝙨 that he voted to fully fund public schools, 𝙏𝙃𝙀 𝙆𝙎 𝙎𝙐𝙋𝙍𝙀𝙈𝙀 𝘾𝙊𝙐𝙍𝙏 𝙈𝘼𝘿𝙀 𝙇𝙀𝙂𝙄𝙎𝙇𝘼𝙏𝙊𝙍𝙎 𝘿𝙊 𝙄𝙏!!! Tarwater ALSO voted 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘼𝙁𝙋-𝙗𝙖𝙘𝙠𝙚𝙙 𝙨𝙪𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙟𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙮 to repeat unsustainable Brownback-style tax cuts over and over. That’s part of how we got in this underfunded mess in the first place.

Tarwater has voted 𝗔𝗚𝗔𝗜𝗡𝗦𝗧 Blue Valley Schools when he voted for a budget that does not fully fund excess SPED costs. He voted to increase MILLIONS of DOLLARS in 𝘁𝗮𝘅-𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 to private, often religious schools. Those dollars taken away from the KS General Fund cannot be traced in terms of whether or not they’re being used to educate children in private school classrooms. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗡𝗢 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗡𝗢 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘀. Meanwhile, the state general fund is depleted of funding that would otherwise be directed to services with taxpayer oversight!

𝗧𝗮𝗿𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗷𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗔𝗚𝗔 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 when he voted to mandate curriculum - the job of elected State Board of Education and locally-elected School Boards - NOT the KsLeg. 𝗛𝗲 𝗷𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆’𝘀 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗮𝘂𝗹𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘃𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 when he voted to eliminate the 3-day grace period for mailed ballots (which was eventually overturned by the Court; the grace period remains in effect).

And what about vouchers? In 2016, we met with Sean Tarwater when he first ran for this seat. He told us he opposes tax money being used for private school tuition. He ASSURED us that, even though his own children attended private schools, he thinks parents and private schools should not ask taxpayers to cover that educational expense. So, SUBV endorsed Tarwater in 2016. YET, once in office, Tarwater voted for voucher-style programs. 𝙑𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙘𝙖𝙣𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙝𝙞𝙢 𝙩𝙤 𝙠𝙚𝙚𝙥 𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙙.

We have a whole section on our Blog devoted to Tarwater - see link in comments to read more, and understand why he is WRONG for voters who support Blue Valley Schools.

𝗛𝗗 𝟮𝟳 𝘃𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲. They have the opportunity to elect a Blue Valley mom who’s also an active PTO volunteer, attorney, and a huge supporter of keeping our schools great and our community strong. 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗦𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝗞𝗶𝗲𝘄𝗶𝗲𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗛𝗗 𝟮𝟳.
