𝗔𝗟𝗟 𝗕𝗩 𝘃𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘃𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗗𝗿. 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗻 in the Nov. 4, 2025 election.
Dr. David Benson was Superintendent of BV Schools from 1993 to 2004 - an 11-year period during which the district grew by 8,000 students, 2 high schools, 4 middle schools, and 6 elementary schools! He was elected to the Kansas Legislature in 2018, where he served as a State Representative from 2019-20. He has a grandchild in Blue Valley Schools.
Before his tenure as BV Superintendent, Benson was a high school teacher and school administrator. He has served as superintendent in several other school districts. He was named Kansas Superintendent of the Year in 2001. He served on the Boards of the Greater KC and OP Chambers of Commerce. He served in the US Army Reserves.
In the Kansas Legislature, Benson voted FOR BV Schools when he voted against a tax break for corporations and a small fraction of ultra-wealthy individuals, which would have underfunded our schools. He also voted NO on using tax dollars to fund private schools.
Benson’s background in education, his long history of living and working in Blue Valley, and his experience in the Kansas Legislature will make him a valuable Board of Education member.
Benson is running against incumbent Jim McMullen, who was endorsed in 2021 by New York-based 1776 Project PAC in their attempt to take over school boards in several states. McMullen won that election by only 51 votes - after spending $45,000 of his OWN money in the race.
McMullen was removed from his position as BV BOE Vice President after only a few months, following a series of discriminatory statements he made on Twitter using his School Board title. The story made regional news, casting BV Schools in a negative light.
As a BOE member, 𝗠𝗰𝗠𝘂𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝘃𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗚𝗔𝗜𝗡𝗦𝗧 𝗕𝗩 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀. Highlights include:
𝗔𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵: McMullen twice voted 𝗡𝗢 to continue a partnership with Children’s Mercy Hospital which provides licensed Social Workers in our schools.
𝗔𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆: McMullen voted 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 a district technology contract that supports essential software - including safety and security measures like building entrance badges; printing within schools; virtual labs in high schools and in CAPS; district cybersecurity; as well as device management.
He has voted 𝗡𝗢 every year on providing each high-schooler and middle-schooler with a district-issued laptop - meaning students would otherwise have to purchase and maintain those devices and buy necessary software.
McMullen voted 𝗡𝗢 on purchasing iPads and Chromebooks for Aspen Grove Elementary before it opened - which would have made it the only BV elementary school without such technology for supervised student use.
𝗔𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝘀: McMullen voted 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 installing turf fields for baseball and softball programs at all 5 BV high schools - which would have put those athletic programs at a disadvantage and forfeited long-term cost-savings associated with maintaining grass fields.. He also voted 𝗡𝗢 on a contract to provide hitting tunnels for our high school baseball and softball programs - essential safety and training equipment.
In 2023, McMullen endorsed BV BOE candidates who were backed by the anti-public education groups “The 1776 Project PAC” and “Moms For Liberty.” Fortunately, BV voters said NO to more chaos and anti-student Board members that year.
McMullen was an original member of the JoCo area Moms For Liberty chapter and has been a regular featured speaker at their events. MFL has already posted in support of him again this year. McMullen’s ideological association with fringe groups like MFL and the 1776 Project PAC are NOT in line with the majority of Blue Valley voters.
We’re fortunate to have Dr. David Benson on our ballots. Benson’s history as an educator - including as former BV Superintendent, and a state legislator, make him highly qualified to serve on the Board. ALL BV voters can vote for Benson in the Tues., Nov. 4, 2025 election, with Advance In-Person Voting beginning on Sat., Oct. 25.
