Moms For Liberty is wrong for Blue Valley

BV School Board member Jim McMullen is active in the local Moms For Liberty chapter, often speaking at their meetings. They have enthusiastically backed McMullen for re-election this year. We’ve covered MFL before, but it’s time for an update.
History: Moms For Liberty is an astroturf (fake grassroots) organization founded in Jan. 2021 by three former Florida school board members and financially backed by undisclosed donors. One of MFL’s founders resigned in late 2021 amid a highly-publicized sex scandal, but the organization remains a force in the anti-public education, school privatization movement. The Johnson County MFL chapter was established in Aug. 2021.
Funding: MFL doesn’t have to disclose how it is funded - though independent reporting shows its ties to other anti-public education entities, including the Heritage Foundation.
Opposes School Nurses: MFL opposes healthcare services in public schools. Since BV Schools provide a variety of crucial healthcare services every day - including on-site nurses, social workers, vision/hearing screenings, speech therapy, and psychologists shared between schools - removal of these services would be highly detrimental to students. BV Board member McMullen has repeatedly voted against social workers and has spoken out against providing health services in our schools. “It’s not positive, and I just don’t support it,” McMullen said.
Attacks on Teachers: Moms For Liberty accuses public school teachers and librarians of “indoctrinating” and “grooming” students. In 2023, the four BV School Board candidates backed by Moms For Liberty and Jim McMullen sent an offensive campaign tweet accusing our teachers of indoctrination. Earlier this year, the local MFL chapter used its social media to target a BV teacher for an Instagram post she made during non-school hours. The local MFL chapter even attempts to cast doubt on the district’s toddler-services program, Blue Valley Parents as Teachers!
Book Banning: MFL is best-known for its nationwide book-banning efforts, including the work of a Tennessee private-school parent (and Moms For Liberty chapter founder) to remove “The Story of Ruby Bridges” from public school curriculum. In Johnson County, MFL attends school board meetings to complain about library books - even though often, the MFL representative speaking is not a parent of a student in the district.
Support for Vouchers: MFL supports taxpayer-funded vouchers for private schools. At least one Blue Valley-area legislator who backs voucher-type schemes has spoken at the local MFL meetings: state senator Kellie Warren. Warren was also the featured speaker at Jim McMullen’s campaign kickoff event when he first ran for the BV Board in 2021.
Too Extreme for Blue Valley: The local Moms For Liberty chapter is SO extreme that it even rallied its members to email the Johnson County Board of County Commissioners to get rid of VOTING MACHINES here.
We know the majority of Blue Valley voters value our neighborhood public schools and appreciate the community that’s anchored by them. Extreme groups like Moms For Liberty do not represent Blue Valley values. We’ve endorsed Dr. David Benson against Jim McMullen in this Board race.
